Introduction to LED Light Therapy: An Overview

LED light therapy is a facial treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at varying depths. It can address a range of skin concerns such as acne, wrinkles and hyper pigmentation.

LED stands for “light-emitting diode” The weavelengths from the light stimulate the skin cells and can results in multiple benefits such as promoting collagen products, reducing inflamnation and improving skin texture and tone.

There are several different colours of LED light therapy including blue, red, green and infrared. Each of their uses will be explained later in this article.

Benefits of LED Light Therapy: How It Works

LED light therapy works by using the different wavelengths of the light to penetrate the skin. Each colour has different wave lengths and stimulates a different response, such as increasins collagen production and improving circulation.

Different Types of LED Lights and Their Uses:

  • Red LED: Used to stimulate collagen production which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it also helps to improve skin texture and tone.
  • Blue LED: Used to target the bacteria that causes acne (P acne). Blue light works by penetrating the skin to kill the bacteria.
  • Green LED: The colour is good pigmentation. It can help create a more uniform skin tone.
  • Yellow LED: Used to improve circulation in the skin, helpful to manage redness, inflammation, rosacea and sunburn.
  • Near-infrared: Known for its ability to penetrate deeper into the skin than other colours. Near Infrared can help to stimulate collagen production and improve circulation. A great extra addition to any other colour because it can be used in conjunction with them.

Understanding the Science behind LED: Photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (PBM) or also known as low-level light therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses different coloured light to stimulate cellular activity and promote a visual benefit.

LED Light therapy is a form of PBM and is a great add on to any skin or facial treatment.

PBM has been shown to effectively reduce signs of aging, acne, redness plus many other skin concerns.

Safety and Precautions for LED Light Therapy: What You Need to Know

Although LED Light Therapy is noninvasive and generally considered safe for everyone there are certain medical conditions and medication that can make your skin more sensitive to light which means this treatment wouldnt be suitable. Its important to consult with our therapists if this is the case and you may be required to provide a doctors certificate prior to LED.

Combining LED With Other Treatments: Synergistic Effect

The best way to use LED is to combine it with other treatments to provide a synergistic approach. This will make LED more effective than using it alone. Some treatments you can combine it with are below:

  • Skin Needling: A very effective treatment where small needles penetrate the surface layers of your skin, when combined with LED the results of microneedling can be enhanced and can reduce inflammation after the treatment.
  • Chemical Peels: Chemical peels can be used to target multiple different concerns and when combined with LED it can encourage the peeling process and provide better results as well as resulting in less red skin after the treatment.
  • Acne treatments: Speak to our therapists about what treatments are great for acne which will include some chemical peels. Adding on Blue LED can help target the bacteria in acne.

To sum it up LED Light Therapy is often an overlooked addition to your treatment and should be considered as a regular add on.
